Hi guys, this question may stick out like a sore thumb in the political madness, but I was wondering if you had an insurance plan for your undocumented parents and if so would you recommend it?

At this point, money isn't the biggest factor, but the coverage is. There's been a few scares this month and although this is one of the many things I can't control in my life, at least I can try to provide them the best protection.

If you have any suggestions or firsthand experiences you can pass along I would SO greatly appreciate it.

My mom pays into insurance through her employer.

My dad is healthy and pays out of his pocket for any medical expenses (I help him).

Insurance is too expensive it can be as high 1k a month for my father. It is ridiculous.

If something does happen, you negotiate with the Hospital and make the monthly payments.

If you can afford 1k a month or so for private insurance, go ahead and do it.

Thank you for your quick response. That's crazy 1k a month?! I severely underestimated private insurance costs...

Your local County should provide some basic level of health insurance coverage for a low fee. Show your parents income and it may help. Good luck

Hi I live in California.

@dreamer83, do we qualify for that? I was under the assumption it was for legal residents only.

Some counties allow undocumented residents to apply for benefits for cases like pregnancy, low cost preventive medicine, etc. It all depends on the county where you live. I would go to your county's health services website and look around. Also, some big cities help with costs.

My parents are undocumented. My dad gets insurance through his job, Humana, he covers my mom and my younger brothers.

It is not required to have DACA for insurance.

@Dreaming Ohh I see, thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into it.

@Johann Yeah fortunately my work covers me too, but my parents work under the table. It seems like most private insurance plans I've been looking into are $1k for the two. That's great your family is covered by your dad's job!

Your parents should be able to get some coverage in CA. My mom has a card that says Benefits of California or something like that and she is able to schedule appointments with the doctor on a regular basis. Don't know whether there are limits on services. Also, look into MyHealthLA in you live in LA county. I was given an appointment to see someone at a local clinic to apply.
