Hey everyone, I'm planning to apply to dental school once I receive my greencard (through AOS from marriage). Long story short, I live in Houston and can only apply to UT dental because my husband goes to medschool in houston (we're both from florida). Therefore, the chances of my being accepted are slim since I'm applying to only one (moving away from my husband is not an option).

My question to anyone in medical or dental school is- how did you explain your status? Did you mention it in your essays, was it a significant part of your essays? UTH and Texas in general are strict with immigration, but I shouldn't leave something like this completely out- I just wonder how much to write about it. They also make considerations for applicants that have tough circumstances to overcome, so this would be my tough circumstance.

You should talk about how your status inspired you, pushed you, given you opportunities, and hindered you. It really depends on how you want to approach it

^Agreed. Focus on how with DACA you have been able to traverse difficult obstacles to reach this point in your life.

I'm resuming my Bachelors and discussed my plan to attend Medical School and focus on healthcare for undeserved populations because of how healthcare and my immigration status are intertwined. The feedback I recieved from my counselor was that this specifically impressed the admissions committee.

Im a current student, almost nearing graduation (i wont disclose what school I go to). While the process was hard, i reached out to the admissions board and explained my situation. Strong stats so I was encouraged to apply and I think the main reason for the interview was because i reached out and they understood me. I got accepted a week after, and this is when Daca JUST came out. Being from a liberal state also helps I guess since the state itself and the public instutition that I go to already has (friendly) set rules on immigration status.

I feel that the bigger question is when will you get your GC? Your ability to obtain licensure is everything. You dont want to go through 4 years of hell (its difficult), spend a ton of money just to not be able to practice.

Feel free to PM me if you want.
