My wife who is a USC is filing form i-130. On question 13, it asks how she got her USC. She was adopted from China before the age of 18, came over with an IR-3 visa, had a greencard for a short term, and then got citizenship because her mother was a USC.

Question 13 asks...

If you are a U.S. citizen, complete the following:

My citizenship was acquired through (check one):
[]Birth in the U.S.
[]Naturalization. Give certificate number and date and place of issuance.
[]Parents. Have you obtained a certificate of citizenship in your own name?

I'd like to say "no" to the third option so we don't need a certificate number. However, I'm not sure exactly what the question means by "in your own name". Does my wife have a certificate of citizenship in her own name?

If your wife doesn't know if she has a certificate in her own name she probably doesn't. But I would ask an attorney to be on the safe side. Try avvo.com. You get free answers to your legal questions from attorneys. Post this same question and you will get a response right away.

More specifics are needed. We would need to know exactly the age she entered the United States because specifics are required as to how she gained US citizenship.

She entered before she turned 18..while in elementary school.

Her mom was a USC (born in the states). When she adopted my wife from China, she brought her here with an IR 3 visa. Then I believe she got PR. After she got a US passport. I don't know if she ever got a certficate, however.

Check parents. If she has a certificate of citizenship mark yes, otherwise mark no.

She'll need to include a copy of her US passport if she does not have a certificate of citizenship.
