In California you can renew your license before it expires, the person who renews would need to retake the vision test and have a valid EAD so they can process your application and also pay $33 again

Last week he got it and it is a regular DL not the AB60 that is given to people who are undocumented.

He has always had a DL because he has always had a SS#. When I expired in April 2015 I had to get a new DL and had to show my EAD to prove legal status. Joking around I told the lady processing my application that if she wanted to she could add extra time this time around. When I got my DL it had an expiration date of Jan 2018. I guess distracting the dmv workers work.
He was probably grandfathered. That's why he was not required to show any proof of status. Trust me... They were not distracted. Lol. I'm from another state but the same thing happened to me. I was grandfathered and I have my license for 8 years.

As a past employee of the DMV it seems to me they didn't process the application for your husband correctly, especially if he applied for AB60, when an application is completed it's sent to Sacramento and if they catch the mistake they would send your husband a letter that the license was processed by error, it happens especially with AB60 some reps don't process applications correctly

The DMV doesn't check for those who had a license for a long time. My neighbor has being renewing his license with no problem for over 20 years and he is out of status.

Trust me DMV does check everyone's record before processing DL or ID, we also checked if the person had a prior license in other states, in some case persons who applied a while ago with fake Birth Cert and some how we're able to produce a good SSN, the system would not flag it, but if for some reason DMV finds out, the individuals get prosecuted

DMVs are not good at keeping records. My neighbor has been able to renew his license every year for 20+ years without any legal status. I believe he got his first license while trying to adjust for something but he was never able to.*

There is this interesting thing that happened to me. The first time I applied for license, they had given me a full term license. 4 years?5 years? A year later, I get this letter from the DMV saying they had issued the license in error. The error meaning that expiration of the license suppose to go with the same expiration of the EAD. So they sent me a license with new expiration date, the same as my EAD. The letter also mentioned to send back the error license or to dispose of it, which I never did. I kept it. I applied for an ID few months after. All I showed was my full term license that was issued in error. They didn't mention anything about the new license. I get my ID like a week after and its a full term ID.*

Check this out...I got stopped a few weeks ago. The cops asked for my license, registration and insurance. I showed the cops my license that was issued in error because my corrected license expired. Cop went to his car to check if its valid and came back good. So weird...

I was not aware that there was a different form for AB60 DL. When he told the employee that he needed to renew the guy never asked what kind of DL he was renewing. Like I said, he has a valid ss# since he's had it from when he was trying to adjust. Once his number was called the other DMV employee didn't ask for anything else. He just had to take the vision test again because he now wears glasses.
