Expired DACA and deportation..

Could you be deported if your DACA is expired but you submitted a renewal for it? Reason I'm asking is because I was eating with a friend at a restaurant today and DHS custom agents came in and were seated right next to us! My DACA expired last week and I haven't heard anything from USCIS. I was just wondering if you could still get deported even though your renewal is being processed.
