Hello, I'm looking for an IT job specifically in the Web Development world. I currently live in PA and there's not many oppurtunties for Web Development. I tried applying to NY, NJ but I haven't been able to land anything. Usually due to experience or not having a bachelors degree.

I DO have experience about 4 years. My dad told me to start applying in Chicago. My question is for those working in IT , what states do you recommend me checking out that give opportunities to web developers with no degree?

hmm.. Interesting, given that you have 4+ years of experience I would assume that finding a job would be easy for you. I honestly think you need to try harder, there are tons of great software companies in tri-state area that are actively hiring. When I found my first job, I literarly applied for over 25+ companies, and found a great job. The company I was hired for, I submitted my application at 2am in the morning. I would also suggest having your resume reviewed by someone else, if you have a portfolio, upload online, I mean, what software developer doesn't have their own site, right? You can also try github, upload some code there.

About not having a bachelors, do need to worry about that unless you are looking for a management position, great developers write high quality code, nothing to do with what school or whether or not they have a bachelor's, and ultimately, that's what most companies care for, what can you do for them instead of what school you went to. Good luck my friend.

What kind of companies are you applying to?

First of all what kind of IT job does web development? IT is not a software or programming area. Please get it correctly. Software people would be insulted if you call it an IT Job.

Second of all, most corporate jobs require a minimum of a bachelor of science degree regardless of how much experience you have. It is a trend that is growing.

Third of all, what stacks do you know?

Fourth of all, apply to start ups. These start ups will most likely hire you if you are a good programmer. You should start there.

Fifth of all, Freelancing. Have you looked on this?

It jobs are not the same as software development jobs. Chicago is a good place. A degree would help. Even if the degree is in another science.

Are you able to get any types of certificates? A LOT of job listings out there want Associates degree or Bachelor's or better - they never ask for proof of this btw and after speaking with people who review resumes - they even IGNORE those degrees and rather look for certificates. Web Development certificates are out there and they aren't hard to get, in the end, it's all about taking a class and a test and of course - pay for it. Some are cheap and others get more expensive.

BTW... If you are looking to do Web Development then you aren't looking for an IT job, you are looking for a Web Development job. Or Web Design or Web Sites or the like.

I do both IT and Web Development and just like edison said I also applied to multiple jobs before I found one and I'm still there today doing both IT and web design. I am in Maryland and found other opportunities in DC and VA.

Make sure you have an impressive ONE page resume and submit it on craigslist or monster.com or alike.

Good luck!

Anything that involves front end development: html, css, javascript
No I haven't looked at freelancing recently.

So you are basically saying that in the reviewing process that hiring managers don't even verify if you do have a degree? They just go by your word?

Depends, my first job asked for a copy of my transcript.

If you are good, startups will not care about your degree. Bigger firms, the HR department will check, but they are just going off a checklist of things to do with new hires.
