Does anyone know if New Mexico or Washington is still offering driver's licenses without legal status? For most of us, our license expires the same day as our work permit.

Washington is, but you better be a WA resident since I've heard they make it a lengthy process (i.e. interviews) if they have any suspicions otherwise.

Thanks. I live near Portland, so that's not really a problem for me.

you can get one in Washington State.

regarding proof of residency: when i moved to Washington from California, i went into their DOL office and they did not ask for anything regarding proof of residency. they only asked me for my address and if that was a good mailing address for them to send my DL to.

they then made a hole in my CA DL, asked me to pay a fee, and gave me a temporary card. interestingly, they extended my expiration date to 2013.

but this was my experience - policy says they should be asking for proof. so take a utility bill or bank statements with your WA address. also take something to prove your identity, like your current DL, and about $100 for fees.

good luck!

Yup, my siblings are both Washington residents so it was straightforward for them. However, we have friends that live in Vancouver and they said the DMV was all up in their business when they tried to get their license after moving across the river from Portland. Granted this was pre-DACA so having a social may have changed things.

According to the DOL website, if you have no SSN, then you have to give them proofs of residency. Not so much with a social.
"Tell us your Social Security number (SSN) - mandatory to help enforce child support laws.
You don't need to show us your card, we'll still be able to verify it.
If you don't have an SSN, you must verify your WA residence before you can proceed"

As for NM, they give you a "driving authorization card" if you have no SSN, or you opt not to get a real ID compliant license, so you can drive in the state, and the more liberal states mutually accept/honor the auth cards of other states, but an employer would probably raise eyebrows if you gave them that one, so I'd just recommend going for WA before they, too, switch over to real ID

Other states have driver's licenses specifically for people without a social.

California and Illinois come to mind.

Most probably looking for one that doesn't say "not for federal purposes"

If it comes to it (still have 11 months left), I will try Vancouver and if they have problems, I will try another town further north.
