Two Republican senators are lobbying senators to include their bill creating a merit-based immigration system in any bill to protect immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

Spokespeople for Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia confirmed to the Washington Examiner the lawmakers are educating colleagues about the Reforming American Immigration for a Strong Economy Act. They hope to make the case for the proposal and swing enough members of the GOP majorities to insist it be added if the Senate takes up the so-called Dream Act.

President Trump mentioned the RAISE Act during discussions with Republicans and Democrats earlier this week. On Friday, Trump seemed to support Cotton and Perdue's requests for action on the RAISE Act. He tweeted that he would not support any legislation that allows relatives of immigrants to be admitted into the United States.

"We ought to take care of them," Cotton said in a telephone conversation Sunday, noting that DACA recipients arrived in this country illegally "through no fault of their own."

"In any legislative fix, I would like to see them receive a green card," Cotton said. At the same time, he continued, "We ought to recognize that giving them legal status has two problems. First, it creates a whole new class of people who will then be eligible for a green card and citizenship -- namely, the extended family members of those who will receive legal status who can, through chain migration, get legal status themselves."

You know, there is some merit to having a debate on this I think, but it really fucks up everything for dreamers

These idiots? who invited them? None of their solutions will work.

They need to address all of the population for that.

In the end i feel something will get done, because it is almost absolutely necessary. Democrats will unite and shut the government. I am not sure if there is any maneuver Republicans can pull. I was thinking perhaps they would do away with the filibuster, just to NOT deal with DACA, but that seems very improbable.

Yes, but not with DREAM Act. That's a debate when addressing CIR.

Cotton & Perdue know RAISE Act isn't popular. It only has 1 cosponsor.

Within less than a week of time, we went from Dems have all the leverage, and we can get it done, to now we have to negotiate with Republicans. What happened to all that leverage?

Agreed, cautiously optimistic is the name of the game. Those throwing wrenches into the works have no desire for a true consensus. If a good minority listens...it is all over for this congressional cycle.
