Using Phone Cards

My regular home phone can't make long distance calls (to D.C.)
Do you think that if I buy one of those cards that they sell for like a buck, it will work?
I have seen that they sell these cards on a dollar store, but i've never tried them... have any of you tried them?

Try the senate switchboard. It's way easier since you only have to know one number. I've tried calling cards, they can be frustrating as hell when trying to call senators.
