Math minor is easy. All engineering students are eligible for a Math minor, just 2-3 more courses away usually. But what good is a Math minor anyway? Seriously?

Math isn't a problem to be honest. It's just we don't have the training students need to get their first job. It's unfortunate.

I graduated with a CS degree, but I have internship and I did a lot of stuff in my lab back then, so I have way more practical experience. Landing job wouldn't be a huge problem except I'd have to study and practice problems on leetcode - trust me, 90% of the people working at FB and Google have studied leetcode > 100-300 questions, even those with 10 years of experience. 10% are probably crazy geniuses. So if you really do do well on leetcode, trust me you will have 95% of chance to land a nice SV job.

However, whether you are capable of doing your job is a whole different story, and to accomplish that we need students to have more hands-on experience. Unfortunately, so many don't. Internship is competitive. The best we can encourage students to do would either be joining a lab in the department, or just build something with classmates.

The H1B is what put america at a competative edge in innovation, bringing talent and etc. Yes H1B has its flaws, but so does every other thing, nothing is perfect.
yes it will, you honestly think most of these people are more educated than someone from here with the same credentials?

do you know how easy it is to fake said credentials?
companies will have no choice, but to adjust their requirements.
you people need to stop pretending like these jobs require some extraordinary skills that an average person wouldn't be able to do.

Companies will just outsource more. Problem solved.

Let's not be concerned with fake credentials. There is always fraud. Even if you did graduate without cheating, you are not always qualified for your job.

I used to think CS PhD would know how to write code. Nope. One applicant claimed he had a PhD from University of Florida. No algorithm / data structure, as the job is for DevOps/SRE, so I focus on practical programming and system designs (I do value algorithms they matter, but for the company I was working for not so much). He couldn't answer much:

1. don't know how to write interface in Java

2. don't know how to write the function definition in Python

3. don't know process vs threads, and how process and threads are managed in kernel and user space.

4. can't really work out a system design involving millions of files and database....

Of course I said No Hire in the feedback. Those are doable for someone with a CS background.

I was puzzled, and I went on HackerNews and asked a bunch of my CS PhD friends. A lot of nods. It is very common for a PhD student lack basic programming skills because some students focus very much in theoretical problems.

If you think most H1B are liars, that's pretty cynical. Maybe that dude was a fraud. I do agree a lot of the H1B do not have the full skillset to do what the job function requires, but there are plenty H1B are actually fit for the job and carry the right engineering skills SV needs. The H1B that don't always need the full skillsets are the ones hired from consultancy like InfoSys, HCL and whatnot.

You won't get real jobs at reputable firms with fake credentials.

It’s hard to confirm credentials for international colleges. While I don’t know personally know anyone that has, I’ve heard people fake documents and certifications to get some of these IT jobs. They take 4 weeks of classes thought by other Indians to teach them the basics. The rest they fake it till they make it

I've heard stories of H1B 'pimp' agencies.
