Every now and then, he would show in his slides a brick wall. Actually, he would show it every time he mentioned a setback. He did it to let the public know that the brick walls are there so we can show ourselves how badly we want to achieve our goal. The brick walls are there to separate those who don't want it badly enough and those who do.
That's incredibly inspirational. Thank you for posting his lecture. I think all of us need reminders as to why we keep on going.

P.S. everyone: I'm a girl. In engineering. Yes, it can be done.
I thought you were a girl, your username kind of gave it up...sparklepouf.. . I am glad you are following engineering and being successfull at it. There is a huge lack of women engineers and hopefully, once the DREAM ACT is passed, you 'll be eligible to many scholarships. Girls in engineering is an awesome thing because we , the boys, bring a very one-sided aspect to the way we design things. Girls look at it from our point of view and from a different point of view that is theirs. So keep going at it, I am sure you'll accomplish even greater things in your life (you've already beaten cancer and that's a huge accomplishment).

Haha, yea, I was hoping the sn made it obvious. I'm a junior right now and ineligible for many scholarships. I was lucky enough to be granted a private scholarship with no residency requirements. Unfortunately, their foundation had to cut everyone's scholarship because they were running low on funding this year. Still - better than nothing. I'll take what I can get. I hope that DREAM is passed while it can still help those of us in school. The irony of this whole situation is - my major is a fairly new one on campus and it's not ABET-acredited yet because there haven't been any graduates. As a result, most of the people in my major are ineligible for engineering scholarships. *shrug*

And I agree - more perspectives are always welcomed - in every field. In my major, the deans did a good job of keeping the ratio of boys to girls even. Wish I could say the same for electrical engineering...

Ha! My friends and I have a saying that Electrical Engineering is a sausage fest ...but CS is very close to being one too . The ABET accreditation is important to get scholarships but I am sure you'll find something with your credentials (good GPA, good college). If you are going to UIUC, congrats because it's a great school! . I was in Illinois last summer doing an internship (but it was like on the border with Wisconsin and two hours away from Chicago).
