HI does anyone know about the NY license law??

I heard that new your just approved licenses for immigrants? does anyone know anything about it?

Supposibly NY did approve that and its supposed to go into effect in december i think.

yes it may go into effect as soon as december. I'm not satisfied at all. It's not like I can afford a car.

Just in brief:

NY State has passed a resolution that will allow NY residents regardless of immigration status to apply for driving licences in NY State and be issued state ID's which would permit people to open bank accounts among other things.

For individuals who have expired licenced from NY, they should be receiving a letter in the mail about this new opportunity and would likely be eligible to apply immediately once the forms and statutes are in place.

For other folks who this will be the first issued licence, April will be month when individuals can start applying for licences. Of course there will be rigorous measures in place including a 6-10 week document inspection process including verification of national identification including passports or matriculas.


This is huge for immigrants in NY especially for our undocumented parents and friends, still waiting for a comprehensive immigration bill, who will now be able to drive.
