That's gonna suck for those of us who currently get 5 year licenses....If we apply for the REAL ID, were gonna get 2 years probably.

Correct, as with Real ID, it is only suppose to last as long as your legal presence.

On regular non-REAL IDs, They expire on your birth-date in my state but are given for up to 5 years. It seems the rules are state dependent.

Still, all States will require a USCIS document showcasing legal presence before an ID can be processed successfully.

Also, I wonder what would happen if you simply renew online.

So is that federal limits apply going to be only in California or is this in every state?

I think it's going to be on every state because they all have to comply with the Real ID requirements.

Does having it cause issues with domestic travels via airplanes?

No It's actually one of the reason why it's implemented. I've read that if you do domestic flights you can show your Real ID and TSA would not let you go through if the ID is not compliant then they can send you away. Of course this is if your state is a compliant state.

Also, for anyone who has a Not for Federal ID that means your state is a non compliant state. So, make sure you check your TSA airport for any updates on when they will start accepting Real ID compliant Ids.

Okay so we need to clear some confusion up here

Real ID is the type of ID that is compliant with with the Real ID Act of 2005. So, if your ID is REAL ID ACT compliant, then its a Real ID which is what TSA will accept. If you don't have a Real ID compliant card, then you can use your EAD or Passport to travel just fine.

My sister just renewed her CA DL online and they mailed her the one with "federal limits apply". Now the question whether she can still use this to fly..?
