Hopefully someone can help me with this:

If you're hispanic, you know that most of us have two or more last names. For the purpose of an example, say my entire legal name (birth certificate) is John Hernandez Martinez. When I applied for DACA, I put my name as John Hernandez and put my entire name in "Other names", with advice of a lawyer.

Anyways, the docs I sent with proof were a mix of John Hernandez Martinez and John Hernandez (for example, from K-12 my names on all documents were John Hernandez).

Officially, I assume my EAD will have my name as JOHN HERNANDEZ. HOWEVER, my birth certificate of Mexico says my name is JOHN HERNANDEZ MARTINEZ.

Will this become an issue when applying for a social security? And which name should I use when filling out the application for a number? The one matching my EAD (JH) or the one matching my birth certificate (JHM)?

No it shouldn’t be an issue. Your social will have the same name as your EAD and drivers license. I had two last names as well and didn’t run into any issues. You’ll be fine, use the name that shows on your EAD as your scocial security will be connected with your EAD.

You can shorten or drop any middle name or drop any second last name.

For example for someone named Jane Anna Doe Roe the following would be valid:
  1. Jane Anna Doe Roe
  2. Jane Anna Doe
  3. Jane A. Doe Roe
  4. Jane Doe Roe
  5. Jane A. Doe
  6. Jane Doe

I’m in the same boat. You have to use both last names if it’s on your birth certificate. Both of them will be on your EAD.

I make sure all my legal documents have both my last names since thats whats on my birth certificate. Probably not an issue, but it's a safer bet having all your names identical.

Shouldnt be an issue. People working in immigration are not stupid. They know latinos have 2 last names. Like you my birth certificate has my 2 last names. All my U.S documents (ead, school ids, transcripts, diplomas, you name it) only has my first last name. If you want your two last names you can use a "-" to connect both.

I don't remember having a choice. I did the same as you on the forms when applying for DACA. USCIS will apply the complete name from your birth certificate or passport? on your EAD and then the same name on the SS card. At least that's the way it was for me.
