Well, this is a lot to take in...
Yes, I will no longer be attracted to this person if I found out they are transgender because having biological children with my partner is a big deal to me. I think it's a huge violation of my trust if someone I am dating didn't tell me they are transgender. That's practically lying about their entire identity. I am sorry but I don't think you need to show attraction towards a transgender person to show support. This is a fact a life, no matter what race or gender you are. Some people are not going to be attracted to you. I am certainly not going to lie about liking someone to make them feel better; That's just false hope. |

Well I definitely do disagree with you wholeheartedly and don’t believe that a person you’re dating has any obligation to disclose that they are transgender unless the topic of children has come up or they’re about to get married/ begin a long term commitment with you (though that’s beyond the point). I’m surprised that fertility is a criterion for attraction. Do you ask people you are potentially interested in if they’re infertile before feeling attracted to them?
I don’t think anyone is saying that you need to date or be attracted to a transgender person. I said that you can express a supportive statement about transgender people and dating without ever dating a transgender person. But outwardly stating that “I’m not attracted to transgender people” can be construed as a value judgement on the value of transgender people. I also think that in order to actually support a community, It may be better use affirmative statements rather than negative statements. Maybe say to a potential suitor: “In the future, I want to have a partner and a biological child”. It’s specific and it expresses what you want without expressing that you are excluding a group of people. At the end of the day, it is your choice. You can say what you want to say in whatever way you desire to say. Everyone is allowed to express themselves freely in this country. But it’s not going to stop me or anyone else from calling you out. I’m sorry but if you aren’t willing to take the time to think about what you say around a group of people, then you really aren’t a supporter of that group of people. What you describe is mere tolerance. Now tolerance does mean that you aren’t a mean hateful shit. That, however, is a pretty low bar. So in summary, say whatever you want. You seem like you’re tolerant of transgender people. But don’t mistake that tolerance for actual support because you certainly aren’t a supporter of transgender people. |
