Moreover, there's no punishment attached to claiming that you're a Permanent Resident, Visa holder, etc, etc, unless that's done in order to either procure documentation for travel, or procure entry (which is immigration fraud). False claim of Citizenship on the other hand makes you inadmissible for life regardless of how the claim was made.

Consider this:
Using a fake green card to enter - misrepresentation, waivable permanent bar.
Using a fake green card to work - nothing.
Using a fake US passport to enter - misrepresentation, false claim of citizenship
