Hey guys, so I got approved for DACA in April and finally got hired by target. I’m 20 years old and this will be my first job ever so I’m new to filing out tax forms.

Now for the W4 form, am I exempt? If anybody could help that would be helpful.

Nobody claims me in their taxes. I am not a dependent for anybody.
I didn’t file for taxes EVER. This will be my first time.
I made no money (first job ever). So I have no income.
I’m just a single, 20 year old Hispanic.

Am I exempt or not?

No, if no body depends on you, I recommend writing zero exceptions. It will be a slightly smaller check, but you won't owe any money to uncle Sam at the end of the year.

Alright thank you, that’s what my initial thought was. TurboTax says to only claim exempt if you won’t make more than $10,350 for that year but if everything goes well for my new job I might actually make more than that. I’ll just go with what’s my gut, and what you are saying.

Thank you!

I actually need some more help lol. Am I dependent or independent?

My parents dont file taxes. I live with my entire family in the same house hold (my mom, dad, and sister). Only my sister, who's a US Citizen does file taxes. However she doesn't and has never claimed me.

So am I dependent or independent?

I claim 2 and I am single. I always end up pretty even with Uncle Sam. I dont know why someone would write down 0 unless you have 2 jobs or you are being claimed by someone else.

Same - I'm single and claim 2 allowances and get a small amount back on my return.

I would claim at least 1, OP. You're not likely to have a large tax liability from a first job at Target, so I would claim 1 and keep more money in my pocket throughout the year.

There's also a an IRS calculator online that you can try that'll guide you on the amount of allowances to claim.
