I also do believe communism may work in many African countries as a means of getting out of poverty, then a gradual shift to capitalism would be necessary to maintain growth, like early soviet era.
No pure communism ever worked. Someone is always in control.

I agree...

I was alluding to the rapid growth of communist Russia during the Stalin era. I think communism (as in inciting a common goal to strive for) has a potential to enact extremely rapid growth... but it does come at a cost of freedom...hence the shift to capitalism to maintain stability.

I just can't see impoverished nations stepping out of poverty without some form of significant control by a competent leader.

I look at Rwanda, which practices capitalism, as the result of a capable leader.

True, but is it possible to enact true communism while maintaining the growth of a capitalist society... I think not. At least not without some form of dictatory power.

I'd much rather a capitalist society, with some sprinkling of social safety nets for this less privileged.

All the examples in this thread are with countries that no longer have Democratic elections...

No pure anything ever works because it ultimately underminds itself. That's why, like most of the modern world, the US is a mixed economy.

This is what pure capitalism in the US looked like:
