I'll be working by the border (McAllen, Texas) for a new project. Will I have any problems crossing the border patrol checkpoints? I read a couple stories about dreamers being detained down there for hours.

Thanks in advance

Technically, not if you have DACA.

Be prepared for harassment, intimidation, and time being taken from you when they hold you up and claim BS like not knowing what the C33 category is.

I wouldn't risk it.

Thanks for the reply. I have to go down for work though. I guess my main worry is them asking about who I live with and all that. I mean my ID has my parents' address..

Never answer questions, if they detain you plead the 5th and request counsel. That’s the end of the harassment the lawyers will take care of the rest.

I' ve crossed the Falfurrias and Armstrong checkpoints several times and here are the three instances I've experienced:

1. Agent asks whether I'm US citizen. I say no and show them my state ID and EAD (card) automatically. Agent lets me go through.
2. Agent asks whether I'm US citizen. I say no and show them my state ID and EAD (card) automatically. Agent asks where I'm headed. Asks personal information. I answer those questions. Agent lets me go through.
3. Agent takes a look inside my car and lets me go through. No questions asked.

There's no reason to fear going through a checkpoint. Just carry your EAD and perhaps a copy of I-797 DACA approval letter with you. Sure, there have been cases where a few people were detained, but that's rare.

Thank you so much. This is exactly the kind of experience I wanted to hear about.

Seriously, thanks for calming my nerves.

I definitely will have it on me at all times. Thanks for the reassurance.

Don't be scared of checkpoints. I am from LA but live in Austin now and like to drive from one place to the other so I have passed by the El Paso checkpoint and the New Mexico one about 10 times total.

-They've asked If I am a US citizen and I said No, hand them my card. They look at it and say thank you be safe.
-They have just looked at me and let me go right through no questions asked. I wave a "thanks
-First time, I had my car full of stuff it was night time and everyone was being checked. The BP officer asked me where I was headed, I told him and said I was moving (I was). He asked if I was gonna drive all the way straight I said I was gonna try but was unsure. He told me not to cause i was about to head to some unsafe areas (I'm a girl), wrote on my phone what city to pull over and use any of those hotels and to fill up on gas right after this to make it straight. And he told me to be safe. Never asked me for my status and was very helpful.

I will say, I do always have my dog with me (I take her when i travel) so I think that might actually help? Also being polite and not nervous helps.
