You can still social security benefits with a work permit.

You can actually get them as long as you've got 40 quarters of work and were authorized to work at some point in your life. It's not uncommon for people who decide to say fuck it and move back to their origin country to file for asylum, get a work permit and SSN, amend their tax returns 10 years back, leave, and collect social security benefits via the consulate abroad.
