I went to update my drivers license at the DMV a couple weeks ago as I usually do when I receive my new EAD to update the "Temp Visitor" expiration date. I received my new card in the mail today and to my surprise I no longer have the "TEMP VISITOR" nor the "A1" restriction on my license.

Wondering if this is new or if I lucked out and the person who processed my card made a mistake?

Yes, I was very surprised too. what a relief. I traveled from ny to GA once, and just for having temp visitor on the license, they did that extra check on me where the tap you everywhere in front of everyone, horrible experience.

The reason for this is that NY issues three kinds of DLs and IDs:

1. Regular (non-Real ID), which basically anyone including undocumented can get, valid for 8 years
2. RealID, which basically requires you to provide proof of lawful status (e.g. DACA) and two proofs of address, and these will expire the day your status expires or after 8 years if you are an LPR or USC
3. Enhanced, which basically requires you to prove that you are a USC and provide two proofs of address, this one is basically a DL/ID and Passport Card rolled into one. Similarly valid for 8 years.

Since you were most likely just issued a regular (non-real ID) DL, there's no requirements for you to have a status and similarly the DL won't list it. So don't expect to be able to fly on it after Oct 1, 2021, but that being said, you can always fly on your EAD instead.
