Besides all the sensationalist headlines, the stay is only for 14 days.

The previous administration entered into an agreement with Texas and a sheriff that DHS will consult and give them a 180 days notice before making any changes in immigration policy. The agreement was entered ~14 days before Biden became president.

You cannot contract away the U.S. government authority to implement immigration policies. There are numerous court cases against this.

This is just a dumb-ass spectacle by the Trump-appointed judge. This is almost certainly will be overturned.

Looks like this might be extended:

Tipton initially blocked the administration from executing its deportation pause for 14 days. The temporary restraining order, Tipton argued, was appropriate under the Administrative Procedure Act.

But during a status conference on Friday, Tipton suggested he'd extend his block, as the case proceeds until February 23. The Justice Department could appeal the temporary restraining order, but didn't indicate Friday whether it intended to do so.

Why is this not appealed or challenged?
