Good morning!
I was previously DACA a recipient and I received my temporary GC by marriage to a citizen.
I changed my last name when I got married and I couldn't change my name on my social security card because SSO office closed (last March due to pandemic) a day before I received GC in hand..

I was so upset because all I needed to bring to SSO office were 1. marriage certificate and 2. green card (which arrived a day after all SS offices closed).

SS offices are still closed and I tried to make appointments but I can't even get connected to a representative when I call them.

My last option for change of name is to mail in original documents of my GC and marriage certificate to SSO. I need to apply for actual GC (I have a temporary 2 year one now) before December. I guess my questions are:

1. Has any one mailed in original copies of their documents? Did you receive the copies back?
2. How long does it take nowadays to change your name on SS card by mailing in application?

Any advices/recommendations appreciated!

Hey I just went through this last year, also name change through marriage and I'm still a DACA holder.

I had to mail original work authorization card and marriage license --scariest thing I've ever done honestly. But they returned everything within 1 week. It took about a month to receive the updated social security card.

It was pretty easy -- I did use certified mail just to make sure it would get there.

Thank you so much for the reply. I was also thinking about certified mail- Did you send it to the local SSO?

Yes, I sent it to my local social security office. I did call my local office first, and got all the information from them about where to send it and how the process would work. That made me feel a little more at ease. Still scary -- Good Luck!

I recently mailed mine in (via UPS) due to a name change. They got it last Wednesday, got my documents back today, and they processed my name change as of today, just waiting on the updated card.

YMMV obviously. I live in a city of about 50k right now so I guess the local SSA office isn't very busy. If you're somewhere in one of the major cities, etc it might take longer since there's probably more applications flowing in.

Though ngl, it does feel super sketchy to mail in originals of documents and hope that they don't lose them.

Well update, got my updated card today.

So timeline for tl;dr:
Form and documents arrived as SSA office: 6/23/2021
Name change processed: 6/28/2021
Got originals back: 6/28/2021
Got new card: 7/12/2021
