learn about the ‘dream act’ AT THE DREAM PARTY

~ GenerationEngage Miami hosts DREAM Party to promote awareness and action about the DREAM Act and immigration reform ~

Miami, October 17, 2007 – South Florida, considered by many the gateway to Europe and the Americas, is no stranger to immigrants. Many families hope to stay and provide a better future for their children. One organization, GenerationEngage, is set on providing a path to permanent legal status for those caught in the middle and invites students, faculty and the public to attend the DREAM Party at the Miami Art Museum to learn more about the DREAM Act and immigration reform. The event, which is free, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m. and will include a question and answer session.

GenerationEngage, which has offices at Miami Dade College, hopes to shed light on the DREAM Act by providing a forum for members to address congressional representatives to make important political reforms. Attendees will be able to engage in a dialog with speakers such as Congressman Lincoln Diaz Balart, an ardent supporter of the DREAM Act and Miami Dade College student Gaby Pacheco, an MDC student willing to share her experiences.

The DREAM Act is a bi-partisan piece of legislation that would provide a path to permanent legal status for persons brought illegally or legally to the United States by their parents or guardians as children. To qualify, these immigrant children would have to meet certain requirements such as proof of having arrived in the United States at age 15 or younger, proof of residence in the United States for at least five consecutive years since their date of arrival, having graduated from an United States High School, or obtained a GED and "good moral character," essentially defined as the absence of a significant criminal record.

Following a question and answer session, attendees will be allowed to write or videotape their opinions on the DREAM Act. These messages will be forwarded to the appropriate congressional representatives.

Too late and a tad too far for a kid who relies on Metrof*cking Buses.
Sigh. Good luck.
