House Republicans released sweeping immigration legislation on Monday that would tighten asylum eligibility, expand migrant family detention and crack down on the employment of undocumented workers.

The 137-page proposed bill represents the legislative response to high levels of migration on the U.S.-Mexico border from House Republicans, who have made border security a focal point of their new majority. The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to mark up the bill Wednesday.

Republicans also want to crack down on the Biden administration’s use of an authority known as parole, which allows the federal government to give migrants temporary permission to live and work in the U.S. The bill states that parole should not be granted “according to eligibility criteria describing an entire class of potential parole recipients.”

Parole has provided the legal authority for programs like the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, as well as programs to help Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion.

Eh. Biden will try to push something through in favor for us at the very last minute in his bid to be re-elected and immigration reform will suddenly be in the forefront once again. It happens every. single. time.

And as always, nothing passes in the last minute (can't overcome filibuster or doesn't pass the house) but they claim they tried and pat themselves in the back.

at this point and in this political climate, neither party has the votes for any immigration bill. With the far right controlling the house, nothing will happen on immigration in the next 4-5 years at least.

More like nothing will happen ever. Even if Dems control everything, nothing will ever pass. At the same time, DACA will live forever

Since 2001?
  • April 2001, The Dream Act was introduced By Democrat Dick Durban and Republican Orrin Hatch. It was rejected by a Republican House and Senate. My life would have been very positively affected had it passed.
  • 2005 Real ID law was passed by Republicans who snuck it in a defense spending bill essentially giving the green light to states to discriminate against immigrants and especially undocumented immigrants by requiring proof of legal status to get a driver's license or ID. My live was very negatively and directly impacted by this and has been ever since.
  • 2012 DACA was ordered by Obama (Democrat in case you didn't know0 After attempts at passing immigration reform by Democrats were rejected by Republicans. This didn't help me personally because I was was 36 at the time and apparently waaay too old to get legal relief. I bet it helped you and most people on here though.
  • 2014 Expanded DACA and DAPA were signed by Obama (again, a Democrat in case you forgot) which would have helped me. I had all my paperwork ready to go and the very day before it was to go into effect, Greg Abbott (The Republican Governor of Texas) sued Obama through a judge known for anti-immigrant rulings and an injunction was put on it which eventually ended it because.......Trump (Republican) became president and didn't pursue it.
  • 2016-2020 under Trump (Republican in case you forgot), he ordered USCIS and ICE to arrest any undocumented they could catch whether they had a criminal record or not- traffic courts, schools, job sites, etc. were all fair game. Even people coming in to adjust their status were fair game. Then one summer he ordered ICE to have a major show of force and go after anybody who may have had a deportation order, overstay, or infraction. I'll never forget that day because I stayed home all day and I know other immigrants who got out of town just in case. Creating terror in immigrant communities was the point. Cruelty was the point.
  • Present time: Who is it trying to get rid of DACA? Oh yeah, Republicans.

But yeah "they're all the same".

Republicans on the other hand absolutely hate us existing. They will do everything they can to make our lives a living hell.

Not the same at all; I agree. They both have failed to solve the issue: one with cruelty, the other with wasting political capital and opportunity in exchange of relatively little (DACA) to keep the status quo - to exploit undocumented labor.
