I'm planning to get a real ID here in NYC as initial application. Planning to go to city and does anyone gone through the process recently? What are the required documents? I'm looking at the website and seems like we just need the our current ID (non-real ID non-enhanced) and social security
card. Would this suffice?

You also need your work permit card as it will match the expiration on your REAL ID.

When I went I just needed to show my current license and the work permit. A passport is only needed if you’re a US citizen.

When I applied, they requested my DACA Approval Notice of Action Form. Also keep in mind that it will expire when your DACA does, so you'll need to renew it accordingly.

So we need to bring our daca approval on top of ead? That sucks that we need to keep renewing every 2 years

As initial/transfer you'll need the following:

EAD (with I-797 approval notice for DACA)
Social Security Card
2 proofs of address (basically anything from list C here with "NYS Resident - Yes"):
https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/id44.pdf

If you're transferring out of state DL then also that. They will likely make you take the written test but you'll get to skip the road test, I've had to do that when I moved from New York to Minnesota.

The documents also need to add up to 6 points for name, EAD (+I-797), and social security card add up to 5 points, so you'll need 1 more point.

Real ID also expires the day the EAD expires, though NYS offers licenses to undocs so if DACA ends you can always renew into the standard license.
