Hi, its my first topic here, I just created my username a few minutes ago, but I have been following the Forum for quite a while now.

I am wondering if colleges can ask you for a green card.
As far as I knew they could only ask you if you were in the green card process.
Could anyone verify?

Thanks

Same here. The schools I applied to wanted both copies of the state ID [for the ID number] and green card. There is really no way around it [at least in FL] if you want to receive in-state tuition.

It's strange; a lot of the higher-end schools like Princeton and Yale don't really seem to care about that kinda stuff so long as you're smart enough to get in. To them, that stuff's no big deal.

Of course, for a state school with state funding, it's different.

Colleges have the right to admit whomever they deem appropriate; let's face it, if they like you enough, they can turn the other cheek.

I go to a CUNY school and when I applied they asked me in the application my immigration status. I put undocumented and that was it. They didnt ask for anything else. I guess it depends on the state

Colleges do ask for immigration status on your application form to determine your financial aid status. However, they cannot reject you because your are an undocumented student. I'm not sure if there is a law that supports this but it just sounds unethical. However, my high school college advisor told me that some of these Ivies don't even look at your application if you're undocumented.

But as a general rule, colleges don't use your immigration status as a factor in their admission decision. It only becomes an issue in their financial aid decision.

There are 10 states that offer instate tuition to undocumented students. Check the general Lounge for a thread dedicated to this information.
