After returning from a conservative convention from this weekend I am beginning to understand the nature of the opposition to the Dream Act : Rednecks. I digress, the true nature of those who are against the Dream Act is misperception. A lack of formidable cognitions replaced with soundbytes and rantings of extremists like Alabama Senator Sessions (wait, did I say rednecks?).
The masses from anti-immigration websites like numbersusa and alipac will bark like puppets predictably when alerted via email that the US gov. wants an "amnesty", but I was suprised when I had a conversation with a person who was in the know. The organizer for the convention I was at (someone who has dedicated their lives to politics), remarked that the reason the Dream Act was shot down on Wednesday was because it provided funding for illegal immigrant students. How do you even respond to that? "uhh... no it doesnt." There is no text whatsoever - not even in-state tuition that is in the Dream Act. If anything the gov. can throw away the money they have already invested in these students through high school and for some college. How do you even begin to comprehend the idiocy of the uneducated masses when you can't even have an intelligible conversation about the Dream Act with someone who is well educated! People out there just do not know what the Dream Act is or what it stands for. For most it is nothing but the superificial "amnesty" they heard from their fellow redneck as he stood up and shouted "they are takin away our gosh dern jobs, how you be spekin I gonna get money ter live on " as he finishes his last budlight.

I am planning to start a blog too. Maybe we can link to each other? Would that increase our numbers?

What do you think?

Sounds good to me. We need to get as much information and counter-opinion to the critics out there as possible. As it stands right now we are not only outgunned in the organized media (tv, radio, etc), we are also being outgunned online. I would like to see some blogs from students who are struggling. Maybe they could move others to support their cause if people knew the suffering that they are going through. It is really easy for the opposition to hate somebody without a face.

m going to put it up on my site too as awareness

btw - some also think that dreamies are highly educated snots... lolz... its NOT my fault
but how do we begin to speak to these people? anyway, i do things like present at conferences,
write papers, maybe soon write a book if anyone cares to publish it. people need to stop shutting
us out as the "illegals" and hear our stories.

It is good to hear that you are very active. I hope that you will be able to go all the way and get your PhD some day. What is your website?
