No flying after May2008

"Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Friday that if states want their licenses to remain valid for air travel after May 2008, those states must seek a waiver indicating they want more time to comply with the REAL ID Act's new rules.

So far, 17 states have passed legislation or resolutions objecting to the REAL ID provisions, many due to concerns it will cost them too much to comply. The 17, according to the ACLU, are: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington state. Duplicate thread but this will get retracted later. Mainly because most of these states will all seek a waiver or sue the federal government if they don't receive one.

REAL ID places an onerous burden, financially and logistically on all 50 states. Some states with large budgets such as Texas, New York and California can possibly handle the reduced costs. Other states like South Carolina, Michigan and Mississippi will not be able to handle the costs, even the reduced price tag. Think about it. $3.9 billion for the next few years may not sound like a big deal to the federal government but its a huge deal to the states who have almost all of their budgets tied to non-discretionary spending.

California and New York have already implemented new security features on their Driver's Licenses that includes many of the features mandated by REAL ID. So I'm sure California and New York DL holders are good for now, at least till 2014.

The seventeen 17 states cover more than a 100 million people. Even if 95% of them are eligible to obtain DLs, reissuing those license will be a logistical nightmare.

This is the hope,but we'll all just have to wait & see.I'll guarantee airline execs,possible airline passengers & people working at the DMV will be the first to revolt.

In fact,TSA already has low approval ratings,which probably will go even go lower come the May time frame.

Does anyone know if you can fly domestically from california to new york with an ISIC (international student id) and a college id, im trying to get out there in march, i contacted the airline which i would be flying and they said they would require a drivers licence and/or state id, or 2 forms of other id. If anyone has flown or knows a little more about this let me know.

^^^It seems that the risk of flying will be mainly to & from States that have officially passed legislation against implementing Real ID.Basically,If anyone is flying to OR from the following States it is best to go by train or car or fly to a State next door;Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington state.HyenaUrs,since the two states you'll be traveling to are implementing some Real ID features it should be business as usual for the time being if flying.

The rest of the states more than likely have implemented some forms of Real ID already & have been granted a waiver until May,2011 by Homeland Security to implement the rest of the Real ID features.It seems the States that are in the process of implementing the features are actually just delaying time until the next Congress & President gets in office.
