Raise awareness among Latino voters

Should there be any plans to raise awareness about the DA in the Latino voters, and mainstream voters. I think that this issue can potentially be a torny issue for the candidates, if they want the Latino support of those who can vote.

What do you all think? Or one can sit back and wait til congress decides to bring up the DA for vote again...but that can take time. I think we need to bring the issue at this critical time.

I agree that this is the best time to get our issue out there. During an election year is when politics becomes a national past time--if we wait until the furor dies, people will forget their passion and settle in for another four years of American Idol. Here are some of the things I think we need to do to get this out there:

Media bombardment--We need to make this story heard everywhere. We need people in all locations to be writing op-eds for their newspapers, encouraging journalists to cover this, writing stories for magazines--contact youguysareawesome if you're interested in this. We also need people who will write letters to the editor, comment on news articles, and so on.

Documentaries--These are happening, but we need more and we need them to be distributed on a wider basis. One dreamer who introduced himself in New Members is having one made about him; I know there was one which showed in my town tonight, and there will be another later this week which is a fictional story of a dreamer. There was a great film about a dreamer, called Goal!, which came out a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure if that raised anybody's awareness. I know I certainly didn't think anything other than "good movie" at the time--and we need films which will make people think beyond that.

And then, of course, basic grassroots organization. Tell people about it, start Dream Act groups in your area or join ones which already exist. Etc.

We need to be very effective and sharp. Everyone should work together towards this goal. Should draft a letter and post it so people can download and email/fax to the senators/congressman and the businesses. Someone should reach Durbin and find out whts going on n all that. The matter is still hot, before its gone and forgotten. We are talking about millions of kids, whose lives are on hold. Just because the politicians are playing politics and not thinking about the reality and the human sufferings. They are there to fix things not to create more resentment in the country. That is LOU DOBB'S JOB.
Which he is doing very well and keeping his job well paid.

You think you're so great! Let me tell you something. If these people don't become legal they will continue to be in this country working for wages without paying SS and without paying taxes and all that. Yes all those deductions you see in your paycheck, they aren't paying any of that. So you American people need to open your eyes. THESE PEOPLE NEED TO BECOME LEGALIZED! It will happen, you will see.

Not the best line to use to defend yourself and most dreamers...

Let us not forget that many undocumented people do actually pay into the system, pay taxes etc.

I was just reading a "Newsweek" article and it brought back something which is really bothering me and I find it true, unfortunately. With all this talk about a recession and the upcoming elections, mainstream Americans will look for a scapegoat to the so called economic issues, What is DAP going to do??? Should we wait and take a defensive stand once the scapegoating starts with illegal immigration and undocumented students? Or do we come up with an argument that aging Americans need an educated workforce to support the future economy. Like the stories from the past, someone will have to take the blame for societal problems. Let's not wait until it's too late.
