When you check your case status, the link to register is on the left column. One link is for signing into your account. When you click on that, you will also see another link to REGISTER. In case you have a hard time finding it, here is the link:
https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/jsps/selectusertype.jsp
You would obviously click on Register as an applicant customer.
If you have an Android phone or Iphone, you can download an app that will inform you when there's updates on your status. The one I used is for an Android Phone called "USCIS Case Status Notifier" by Spinach Software.
