Sabryna,

The most accurate info I can find is from http://micevhill.com. An excerpt reads "The first cloture vote is expected to occur at 2:15 pm EDT on Tuesday, September 21. Depending on the outcome of that vote, the Senate either could conduct a series of additional votes in relation to the defense bill and the DREAM Act amendment to it during the week, or the Majority Leader could be forced to pull the bill from the Senate floor, altogether."

The only other thing I would add is what my brother, who is an immigration councilor and specialist, believes. That is, if the DREAM amendment to the DOD bill fails (and maybe even if it passes) Obama will take executive action in October for temporary protective status. This would give millions of law-abiding immigrants work ID permits and driver's licenses. The theory is that, regardless of the November election outcome, the US Congress would then be pressured to do CIR next year. His belief is partly based on the memo entitled “Administrative Alternatives to Comprehensive Immigration Reform”, by USCIS, which was leaked in July. After the 2007 disaster, I refuse to idulge in too much optimism...but there is always hope.

Hmm, maybe someone can correct me here but, going by the numbers that Levin was mentioning when he was refuting Mccains argument and mentioning previous amendments added to the DoD bill, it seemed like an amendment only needs 50+ votes to pass, and we need 60 votes for cloture.

With that in mind, are they worried about the bill surviving the first cloture vote (without ammendments), then DA and DADT getting added and the bill failing the second cloture vote (i.e. bringing the finished bill to the floor for a vote)?

***Currently the DREAM Act has been reintroduce by Senator Dick Durbin as S.3827 with 2 co-sponsors Senators Patrick Leahy and Richard Lugar. Under senate rules it has been placed on the senate legislative calendar, meaning it can be called to a vote at anytime with a 2 day notice***

I can always count on ECW for the latest status of the DA
