You have to sign up. Doesn't matter if you didn't know about it or they didn't contact you for some odd reason.

i second this concern, same scenario here. This is really not discussed anywhere, not mentioned in the act itself, not even media I mean apart from asking a lawyer which would probably not happen because the act has not passed yet, I really do not see any other way to find out about the SSS.
I know in the sss site they mention how they go to public high schools, but they never went to mine, and trust me, my school is small enough that I would have known.

I mean you have to go to a post office to just pick up their application, this is the technology age, the only reason we step into a post office is to ship a text if we did not get it on e-book format or because we sold something on ebay and need it shipped (at least that has been my case).

agreed....all we have ever received were letters for registration (voter)...and in all honestly..my brother came here when he was 14, 15...he just turned 26 this year...and guess what? he is not registered because he never knew about it...and i dont blame him..how is one suppose to know to do this? even if it is a condition of the dream act i find it to be absurd especially when not enough effort is put into making it known.

Please go to the SSS website for more info. Here's what it says about non-citizens...

"Almost all other male noncitizens are required to register, including illegal aliens, legal permanent residents, and refugees."

If you haven't already...REGISTER!

its not required for USC, its only recommended for PR, and its mandatory for illegal aliens.

From my understanding it plays a part during citizenship applications for PR individuals, not yet sure what role it plays for an adjustment of status or any other path to legalization that currently exists or may exist in the future for undocumented in order for them to make it a requirements explicitly, but I don't think I want to personally find out.

Guys, on the thank you letter from the selective service, what does it have on the social security area. Mines has a SSN and I left the SSN box blank when I mailed it.

I registered 20 days after my 18th birthday, I went to the post office and I was hoping to remain anonymous, then the lady looked at it and said "you forgot to fill out your social" my quickest response was oh I didn't put it for security purposes in case it gets lost in the mail. Whew lucky me I got my confirmation letter last month.
