This is exactly my situation. It's weird because it's foreshadowing what might happen.
The only difference is that I went to community college for two years. My money will run out after my first semester as a third year at UC Berkeley.

I bet some readers of Newsweek will help him get back into college.

Any other Cal students here?

That could be my story, except I went to community college first, then went to Berkeley for two years and graduated.

Juang - Berkeley has given me a tremendous boost in prestige just on the name recognition alone. When you do get the ability to get a job, you might regret not attending UCLA.

A degree means different things to different people. Some want to fit in, some want to continue their education at the highest level. Being able to get a degree from Berkeley is a great accomplishment for anybody.

Good luck to her, I hope she can go back soon, and I'm sure she will.

Go bears!

You have a point there, however, to some of us there's the need to bring money to the house while studying. Putting "all your eggs" in one basket is not a good choice when you don't know if you'll be able to make money with your degree.

I got accepted back in 2002 and now (2009) I'm still without status. Can you image how much money I would had invested and "lost" if I had attended to UCLA and gotten a degree in anything? And the worse part would be that stupid degree would be gathering dust in my dirty closet (like my AS degree is doing today) while I would be a dishwasher in a fancy restaurant.

Yes, my AS degree is hidden somewhere, but at least I'm making money out of it. Once I become "legal" I would still be able to use it, and better yet, I would be able to get a job with a better salary in a bigger company.

This is a "win-win" situation for me.

I guess it all comes down to your "priorities". For me, my priority was being able to get an ok job even without papers. Others may have other priorities.
