are there checkpoints if you do not go through I-5 or 101 to SF? Are there any other way? I thought you had to go from I-5 and 101.

Basically is there any immigration check point at all from LA to SF?

Lol. Its a scenic drive.. Never been to SF.. plus the bf is driving.

I am slowly getting excited to check out San Fransisco myself. I don't really want to travel with a friend but feel scared to take Amtrak/bus up there and back down.

well we took the 5 north to 152 to 85 to the 280 and no check points whatsoever. they had awesome fruit stands on the way $1 cherry baskets =). i loved it there, didn't want to come back =(
