So a dreamer must be undergoing deportation proceedings in order to be eligible to apply for a work permit?

According to the article, yes. But, a legal loophole may exist. Before the release of this official good news, a fellow dreamer on this portal informed me that he will be receive his work permit, and he was not even detained. He applied for a work permit through a lawyer. I think his post is even in the Lounge. I believe his name is Xavier.

To all of my spanish speakers, this is an excellent question to ask Immigration Lawyer Mario Lobo (who appears on Despierta America).

May I ask what a work permit includes? Is it literally just a permit or a card that lets you work? Or is it that plus a social security number?

With a work permit you can go to a SS office and apply for a SSN and a driver license

I would not jump and try to get myself deported just yet, as other people have mentioned this is not a guarantee that you will not get deported specially with the history this administration has on deporting the people they intend to deport in the first place (Secure Communities). I would take a wait and see, in any case, if while waiting you find yourself in deportation proceedings well, then this is useful, but unnecessary risks is not my strategy.

But already a few other are commenting on this and Durbins site lists the following (I am sure someone has probably posted this somewhere.)

http://durbin.senate.gov/public/inde...2-7b4c4ea48d2b

and as one of my friends and a member of the IYJL group mentioned

"I'll believe it when I see it and I hope this announcement doesn't mean that the immigrant rights movement will soften its tactics with the Obama administration. This is not a victory, this is a response to the increasing criticism around the country." - R. W.
