Interesting. I was wondering if I could start using my maternal last name only.

I used both last names for DACA (stupid) and then I tried using just one for my SSN but the person handling my application insisted that I write my name down exactly as it appears on all my documents (two last names).

I used both last names as well. When my brother got his work permit a few years back when he got a job they used the maternal last name as his last name and the paternal as his middle name. I wonder if that's common. They insisted that the last name on the card is the last name to be used.

I went in to the SSA office yesterday. I did not print out a form before because I mistakenly thought they would have forms there to fill out. I thought that the part of the form on top that reads Name (To be shown on card) would be the adequate place to leave out the maternal last name. However, since I did not have the form, the lady simply took my passport & EAD & she typed in my info.

I asked her if I could leave out my maternal last name because I thought that was what part 1 on the form was for. She said it wasn't possible because it had to match all my other documents. I was really hoping to exclude it because on the DMV handbook it states that my DL/ID will have to match these as well.

Did anyone with two last names/ no previous SSN / & filled DACA applications with only one last name receive their EAD with only one last name on it????

I only gave USCIS one last name, that is all they asked, your last name, not name(s).
So while my passport and BC have my paternal and maternal, I only applied with one.
My EAD has one and SSA only used one.

That's what I had interpreted from the application as well (last name, not names). I had filled everything with only my paternal & planned to keep it this way. However, after going to a DACA clinic to speak to lawyers (I asked several, being as paranoid as I am) & they all said to include both. Still not convinced I called USCIS and they said to write the legal name as it appears on my documents. Fearing that if I did not follow this advice I could delay/or risk denial I followed this against my will. Now I'm thinking I should have followed my gut.

Is there any way to change it?

I put one last name only but on my biometrics visit I think they added my maternal last name because my ID had both last names..
I guess I'll have to wait to get my EAD to see if thy added my second last name or not

OH so that's why it worked for you, because your EAD only lists one last name. For those of us who listed both last names for DACA, I dont think we can change it anymore. Unless we go through the whole court thing...

Go to a probate court in your state. You'll need a state issued ID and your SS card. Once your receive approval from the court go to SSA to change your last name, then DMV, then to USCIS. This is what I plan on doing since I (stupidly) used both last names.
