I would at least like to have a non-driver NYS ID receipt this week as I am attending an event that requires Govt ID
I feel unsure about bringing my EAD.
Probably not, the requirements list lists only the actual card. Other states for example accept w-2 and 1099 forms. New York does not.

Nope, you need the SS card, or at least your number. You can get your number from a local ss office. The NY dmv are very adamant about the SS card, i had to argue with them, they took my 821 letter, and 6 points.

Your EAD is a Govt ID, should carry it at all times until you get your ny state ID. So ur fine for now, even if you get the SS card, you have to wait 1-2weeks for the ID. Theyll give you a temp id, which is a receipt paper with ur info on it, just use it with ur ead.

Does anyone know if they will stamp a NYS ID "temporary visitor"? I HATE that!

Yes, but I already knew my SS number, they didnt want to take the SS printout, so I pointed to part in the form that says, if no social, you need 6 points and a letter from DHS stating your status.
The man called his supervisor, and they gave me a look, then let me pay and gave me temp id/ told me my permit will arrive in 2 weeks.
Funny thing , the next day I got my ss card in the mail. Being a chick and blonde didnt hurt either, but I just couldnt wait. Sure EAD is great, but an ID from any state makes life easier, and avoids people/friends raising questions.

Go in last, put it in the ID space in a wallet and just give it flipped open so they'll just see the guard looking at your wallet.

I totally feel you! It's so embarrassing. I've been using my passport for the longest. It's even worse when bouncers ask you "where are you visiting from?" and welcome you to America.

A NYS ID would be ideal but they do mark it "temporary visitor status expires xx-xx-xx" in red. Can't hide from it!
