People if you qualify go on the IRS website and look for VITA programs around your area they will help you and explain to you what every single thing on your tax return means for free! I know people tend to look the other way when something is free but this really is worth the try.

No you don't. No irregardless of status I know some colleges don't even issue one. The college I attend says they won't issue me one unless I give them my SSN which at them moment I don't even have. IRS doesn't care where the money comes from as long as you qualify for American Opportunity Credit, Education expenses, or Lifetime Learning Credit. Now what could happen is you could be unable to claim that credit even though you paid for the tuition.
great info. thanks a lot

My parents file taxes each year with our ITIN's. I gave the school my ITIN and received a 1098-T and I pay out of state tuition as well. My parent's claim me as a dependent and get a good chunk of that tuition back, I believe around $2500 or so and just keep recycling that towards my education. Our tax preparer has said I can claim my book expenses as well which I haven't yet done, but I plan on trying that this year because 1800 is bucks is a lot.

Only as a volunteer. I understand basic tax law. If anyone has any questions I can try my best with the tax knowledge and experience I have.

Great! heres my situation;

paid tuition w/ $ from over seas
no one claims me as dependent
juss got my social
had an itin since 2010
never had job
out of status - as fox news like to put it ''illegal''
never filed taxes before

now since i have my social, am i good to claim back taxes w/ 1098-T alone?

No because you have no income to report. :/

If you have a job now before this year ends you could file to get back any withholdings (probably very little) and claim the education credit for this year.

As far as for past years it won't be possible unfortunately.

Edit: Now that I think of it it might be a bit 'iffy' if you file a tax return and claim that you are no one's dependent when you probably won't earn that much income in this month that's left of the year. You may try it if you'd like but whoever does your return might question that.

I'm 21 now. My parents claim me as a dependent. Does that make a difference?
