I opened my account with Citi when I was in high school..6 yrs ago without SSN nor ITIN. I updated my account a couple of weeks ago after I got my SSN. The customer service was very very polite asking about my current immigration status (are you now a permanent resident?) I'm assuming they have a lot of cases where people open a bank account without any SSN nor ITIN because they don't have it, and it's a touchy situation to ask what kind of immigration status that you hold. Well, she updated my account at that moment without any problem. I didn't even have my actual card with me (it will be better if you have it with you, btw). She mentioned something about how the bank will send letter about once a year to make sure that the "information" that I provided was correct, usually around the tax period, to go with the regulation. So, don't be afraid to go to your bank and tell them that you want to update/change the info on your account. They don't want to lose you as their customer anyway.
