Ianus' post can be confirmed at http://leahy.senate.gov/MFTF/2007/01/04.html#a3347. I also checked http://thomas.loc.gov/ for the S.9 bill but all it said was:
Quote:
The text of S.9 has not yet been received from GPO
Bills are generally sent to the Library of Congress from the Government Printing Office a day or two after they are introduced on the floor of the House or Senate. Delays can occur when there are a large number of bills to prepare or when a very large bill has to be printed.
This is encouraging.

The Senate is not the problem. The House is. Senate has been pushing immigration reform and DREAM Act since 2003. The democratic controlled House did not even include immigration reform as one of their Top 10 legislative priority that they promised to pursue within first 100 legislative hours. That's discouraging.

For anyone wanting to keep track of the Senate bill they can always use this link.

There are two new articles concerning some key players in reform.

In this first article both Chairs of the immigration sub-committee from the Senate & the House include their opinions on the matter.
Quote:
"We're going to get it passed," said Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., who replaces Texas Republican John Cornyn as chairman of the Senate's key immigration subcommittee.

With Democrats in control, the next version of a Senate bill could largely resemble bipartisan legislation that Kennedy co-sponsored with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., offering eventual citizenship to undocumented immigrants after they pay fines, pass background checks and meet other conditions. A guest worker program in the McCain-Kennedy bill sought to bring in up to 400,000 foreign workers a year and offered future U.S. citizenship to qualifying participants.

The Kennedy-McCain bill served as the framework for the legislation that eventually passed the Senate, but its guest worker program was scaled back. The legalization feature was also redrawn to create three categories that determine eligibility based on the length of an illegal immigrant's stay in the country. That hard-to-administer feature, which aimed at attracting support from wavering Republics, will likely be jettisoned.

The outlook is a bit more fluid in the House, which under Republican control never seriously debated a comprehensive measure. But Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., the incoming chairwoman of the House immigration subcommittee, said she is optimistic that House members eventually can find accord on legalization, guest workers, and other contentious provisions.

"We're at the beginning here," she said. "I believe that if we stop yelling at each other and just methodically work our way through the outstanding questions, that we can come up with a practical solution."
In the second article dubbed "Congressional leaders predict immigration law" McConnell & most importantly Steny Hoyer the Democrats new majority leader mentions there take on the immigration debate on Fox news this evening. It's important to note that these two newest members on the forefront will be crucial to any CIR bill.Steny Hoyer has the support of moderate & conservative members of the House Democratic Caucus & Mitch McConnell can filibuster in the Senate.
Quote:
House of Representatives Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said on "Fox News Sunday" that immigration was one of the topics discussed when congressional leaders were invited to the White House last week to meet with Bush.

"He (Bush) smiled and he said, 'You know, I think I'm going to have a lot easier time dealing with you on immigration than I had dealing with the House Republican leadership on immigration,'" said Hoyer.

"I think that's the case," said Hoyer, who did not detail the plan.

Bush proposed a major overhaul of the immigration system that included a limited guest worker program and an easier path to citizenship for many already in the country. He coupled that with money for increased border security.

In the end, House Republicans killed the immigration overhaul and Congress limited its action to approving money for 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky agreed that an immigration bill was possible.

We should all send thank you notes to Sen. Leahy for introducing CIR for 2007. God knows he's probably receiving tons of emails from the ALIPAC and FAIR people. Let's continue to push for it guys! This may be the year!

Yes. People should not just assume it's going to be just the Senator's work. We have to work and get supporters words out there asking for immigration reform and overshadow the critics.

So if you're one of those sitting there assuming it's going to pass and you have nothing to do or that your words won't matter, then you're wrong. Send an e-mail or two, or hundreds to supporters and senators.

When is that database of Senators coming in, or did I accidently miss it?

I think credit is due where it ought to be given,Leahy is certainly one of the important co-sponsors but the Majority leader himself is the actual sponsor or Harry Reid.

On another note, here is an mp3 podcast with Zoe Lofgren herself on immigration reform in 2007.Nothing new in terms of info, but it's still good to hear the info directly from some of the key Reps, she did mention that the first-half of the year is certainly an achievable goal for reform.

I want to convey some encouraging words from the majority leader. The majority leader of the house of representaives Steny Hoyer
predicted that immigration will indeed be inacted. Hoyer along with other congressional leaders had a powwow with Bush last week wherein immigraion came up, Bush acknowledged to them that he will in fact have an easier time with them on immigration than he did with the republicans.

I hope this will refute and head off hearsay that the house of representatives won't take up the matter.

Quote:
Democratic and Republican leaders predicted on Sunday the U.S. Congress would pass an immigration law this session after scuttling President George W. Bush's plan last year.

Democratic leaders also said they were looking at ways to provide middle class tax relief, with one hinting of possibly ending some tax breaks for the wealthy.
