Im a former dreamer living legally in Canada now . I'm on my second year of my undergrad studies. Although Canada isn't the same as living in U.S. , I don't have to worry about being undocumented now and I love seen my social insurance card (Canadian social security card) in my wallet. If you haven't fixed your situation I encourage people to apply for a canadian study permit. If you apply make sure you tell them THE WHOLE TRUTH in regards to why are you undocumented in the U.S. NO LIES. Write them a letter with your application explaining the whole situation and that you feel more American than your original nationality, which isn't a lie because most of us have lived in the U.S. since we were little kids. Get reference letters from college professors, high school, and if you know a city/state government person that knows your situation asked them for a reference letter. Also, make sure you have money saved to cover your studies. Once you get into Canada it is pretty easy to find a job, and after 6 months you can apply for a work permit to work off campus. The doors are wide open in Canada ,for now, because they need professional workers and the economy is doing really well overhere. Again don't lie, don't do anything illegal, in other words dont fuck with t CIC (canadian immigration agency) if you decide to apply for a Canadian study permit.

If you wanna keep waiting for an immigration overhaul in the U.S. well keep waiting. I waited 10 years until I had enough.
I got some questions, did you go back to your country of origin and then apply for a Canadian study permit? Or did you do it from the U.S.? How's life over there compared to the states?

Do I really have to tell them about my status? What if I return my country before applying for a student visa?
Yes you do, you have to tell them your whole story. I had to start with why in the first place my parents decided to move to the U.S. and why they overstayed their visa. Although, if you apply to Quebec I heard its a different process because you are actually applying to the providence not the federal government. I'm not really sure how compassionate the French are.

No, I didn't go back. I sent my application to the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C. It's different, Canadians look like white people in America, but it's a different mind set. A lot of them seem to hate the U.S. but are obsses with it at the same time. It is pretty much a socialist country and therefore people tend to be lazier over here because there isn't so much competition like in the U.S. The weather Is terrible, you only get two warm months and that's it. Also there isn't so much mixing over here, everybody is in their own little group. Asian with Asians, Muslims with Muslims, etc. whereas in the U.S. you have more of a melting pot.

But why do I have to tell them my story if I'm applying from my home country? How would they know I was illegal in the US?

I have been wanting to go to Canada for a little while now. I am also Colombian and been here since 11 y/o. Also met a really special girl online from Canada so that's why I wanna go there too lol. The problem is that apparently they need like $10,000 per each year you plan to stay and I barely have 1k lol.

US & Canada share a lot of information between the countries regarding immigration. Try entering canada from the US (or vice-versa) with a recent DUI or controlled substance possession charge.

So the reason is that you have to share that information with them is because you're a known visa terms violator. Why should Canada let you enter if you have a demonstrated history of not giving a damn about leaving when your visa up?

However, people reviewing your application are humans and they have the emotional capacity to understand why you may have overstayed and what other extenuating circumstances you my have. This is why you write an explanatory letter -- to let them know that in the past conditions were different, but now are better and that you won't overstay this time. Honest!

Yea you know what, I've heard they hit you hard with taxes over there and there is a lot more government regulations, I like the states, little government interventions, the taxes are kept to a minimum when using loop holes and the election process is really good but I guess Canada would be my second option but #1 is definitely the United States, plus they have an amazing looking passport

They will check all your background information and all the countries you have been to.

Oh okay, fair enough.

What about applying for grad school. Do I apply after I get the visa, or before?

Will getting accepted into a school increase my chances of being admitted?

I don't have a problem with high taxes if you ask me. The U.S. is my first option too because I considered it as my homeland . Hopefully one day ill be able to go back., but im facing the 10 year ban for now.The new Canadian plastic bills are pretty nifty aswell.
