Members of my family have served in the US military during most major American conflicts since the Spanish-American War; so I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

I would also love to join the peace corps. And I had never heard of Teach for America, but since I am majoring in elementary education I think it'd be a great idea to join them once I graduate.

Teach for America

Quote:
Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity. Learn more about our mission and theory of change.

Our mission is to enlist our nation's most promising future leaders in the movement to eliminate educational inequality. Learn more about who we are looking for.

In the short run, our corps members work relentlessly to ensure that more students growing up today in our country's lowest-income communities are given the educational opportunities they deserve. In the long run, our alumni are a powerful force of leaders working from inside education and from every other sector to effect the fundamental changes needed to ensure that all children have an equal chance in life.
Teach for America is a non-profit but members do get an AmeriCorps stipend for their work. I saw a member of TFA spotlighted on Anderson Cooper 360 when he was in New Orleans.

Peace Corps

Quote:
The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship.

Since that time, more than 187,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.

Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and committing more than 1,000 new Volunteers as a part of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities.
I heard its hard to get into the Peace Corps but maybe, Dreamies can go back to their native countries under Peace Corps (especially if you know the native language).

But the DREAM Act only allows college or the military for the path to legalization not these other programs.

AmeriCorps

Quote:
AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.

AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have provided needed assistance to millions of Americans across the nation through their AmeriCorps service.

AmeriCorps opens the door for citizens to serve in a variety of ways. Through their service and the volunteers they mobilize, AmeriCorps members address critical needs in communities throughout America, including

* Tutoring and mentoring disadvantaged youth
* Fighting illiteracy
* Improving health services
* Building affordable housing
* Teaching computer skills
* Cleaning parks and streams
* Managing or operating after-school programs
* Helping communities respond to disasters
* Building organizational capacity

Full-time members who complete their service earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. Members who serve part-time receive a partial Award. Some AmeriCorps members may also receive a modest living allowance during their term of service.

Air Force. I have a weird obsession with airplanes even though I don't know anything about how they run or any of the engineering aspects of them.

Or the Marines. I want to kick some assssss! LOL j/k. I think Marines are just amazing. It would be an honor [for me anyway].
