So effectively unless you're from some place that has low amounts of immigration to US, and speak said language (you have to be from a country that speaks the desired language, and speak said language), you're not getting in. Also, you are in competition with all the legal non-immigrants who also want to enlist via MAVNI. Another part being - as a non-citizen you will have no security clearance, so shit jobs await.

How many people do you think will be eligible to benefit from this? I'd say maybe 3-4 thousand from half a million that got DACA are eligible. How many do you think will enlist? Signing up for 6 years of service is a huge leap forward (even if I was able to, I really don't know if I would, it would feel like leaving my entire life behind, it would feel like getting a fake identity).

Another part being - only US Army actually accepts MAVNI recruits. Air Force accepted a few and they have no official releases about it. Other branches (ex. Navy) don't accept at all. US Army are the guys sitting in bases in Afghanistan and other volatile nations. Those are the first guys to get shot at, especially with ISIS thrashing about in the region.

What Obama should do instead is to allow DACA, TPS, and DED holders to enlist the same way US permanent residents can. It would only require an Executive Order under the same section which authorized MAVNI - but who expects a certain democrat president to not be a wuss?
No Offence buddy, but you don't know a whole lot about military life. I'm not here to correct you, just remember what you see on the news and movies isn't quite accurate.

The Pentagon is to start recruiting undocumented immigrants who came into the US as minors and possess valuable skills like speaking Persian and Chinese. The program offering the opportunity is capped at 1,500 recruits per year.

The new policy revealed by the DoD on Thursday expands the existing pilot program called Military Accessions Vital to National Interest, or MAVNI. It has been tried since 2008, offering positions in the US armed forces to foreigners living in America legally as refugees or under a temporary visa.

Starting next fiscal year, MAVNI will also apply to illegal residents who came to US with their parents before age 16, reports the Military Times. The potential recruits would be selected from those eligible for the 2012 Obama administration policy known as Deferred Action for Child Arrivals, or DACA. Getting a DACA illegal immigrant status involves a background check by the Homeland Security Department.

The Pentagon recruits some 5,000 foreigners each year, most of them ‘green card’ holders. The MAVNI program may account for up to 1,500 recruits annually, although the military services are not required to accept them. In practice the Army has been the only service to accept a significant number, while the Navy and Marine Corps are not seeking applicants under it.

A recruit must meet higher-than-usual standards and have certain skills valued by the US military to get a position. Those include medical training and language expertise. Speakers of Arabic, Chinese, Pushtu, Korean, Russian, Urdu, Hindi and Hungarian are among those in demand.

The expansion of the program to illegal residents adds between 1.2 million and 2.1 million children, teenagers and young adults to the potential talent pool. The recruits would be offered an expedited path to US citizenship as an extra incentive to serve.

But some Pentagon officials have doubt over the number of recruits who would actually qualify for the MAVNI program.

“We’re just not sure how many within that existing population of DACA would have the linguistic skills to qualify,” said one defense official familiar with the policy change. “These are kids who entered the country at a fairly young age and have basically grown up in the United States, so the limit of their language talents would probably be the language that they received at home.”

The Pentagon’s move is part of a wider effort by the Obama administration to ease pressure on immigrants and integrate them into American society. It comes amid frustration in the White House with the failure of Congress to pass a substantial immigration reform.

What does the exactly mean so next year it I'll be open to all DACA?

Only those who meet the other requirements for MAVNI, which are:
Be a medical professional, or/and:
Be a native of a country which speaks the desired language, and speak the said language. So you cannot

Some examples:
1) You're a Czech citizen and they require Czech. As long as you are able to speak Czech you are eligible.
2) You're a Mexican citizen, you are not eligible, even if you speak a desired language (unless you hold another citizenship which might make you eligible).
3) You're Polish, you are not eligible unless they once again will seek Polish speakers under MAVNI.

This is all starting the next fiscal year, so starting October 1st. As I said in my previous post - MAVNI is an extremely limited program with few DACAers being able to benefit here.

I really wish Obama could stop being spineless and make recruitment outright open to us. Law permits recruitment of non-citizens without any restrictions if the situation requires it. Only thing needed is an EO.

Honestly? -- Urdu & Hindi are in high demand? I speak both (well, more Urdu, only a few can speak pure Hindi). And some Arabic.

Is it because joining the military among Indian's is generally frowned upon? Is it that inconceivable to the Indian/Pakistanian mind to sign away 3-6 years of your life for a mere 20k bonus, or less or not even that, that makes it less appealing for the average Indian/Pak person (minus the adventurous individuals in any given population)?

I'd say if you want in, you better get in line now .. before every other dreamer, and before the line gets larger, for all we know, if the recruiting officer likes you enough, knowing Spanish will do as linguistics

Doesn't work like that. Recruiters can't really sneak you in like they used to.

"Only 3,000 legal immigrants have enlisted under the program, called Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI), in five years. "

That looks like a pretty good ratio to me, that means the demand is not as big as everyone here thinks, and there maybe be space for all of you who may be interested in enlishting

Interested in becoming a citizen of the US in the day (and bypass LPR): https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/wha...hool-officials

There may be other specialties, or special skills they maybe interested in? Since by the language that is used it appears they include medical, and linguistics, but the language they use make it sound like there is more.
