Pingpong, to the best of my understanding schools request to see financial assets of a student and or their 50% dependents/supporters. I say 50% in reference to the rule that if a student contributes more than half of the financial support to a dependent or receives more than half of his/her financial support from a supporter, then, by law, schools are permitted to review the financial assets of those other persons.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that this issue could be relatively settled if you just state that you weren't married in 2006, nor did your husband enter the picture of providing any financial support, much less 50%, till later.

I don't know if you've tried this but maybe you should speak to a financial aid counselor who is versed in the intricacies of student finances. I assure you that most of the people who work at the front desk are trained in manual regulations and are taught to think within the bureaucracy of written regulations.

If you have spoken to a counselor and/or have been firmly told to divulge your husband's financial paperwork, then I see no other recourse except what others have said above, including paying back taxes, etc.

How do they know he filed taxes then? He might have been out of work and had nothing to file. Hint hint, nudge nudge.

I don't know, String. Apparently the IRS knows everything. And I kind of get it, because they don't want me to be pretending like I need financial aid and lying about this while he's actually making 100,000$ a year or something, but still, argh.

Thanks, Rahman. I sent them a message saying that, so I guess I'll find out on monday. Hopefully that'll work and all I'll have to do is bring them my marriage license.
