I would think that the landowners and the states would be upset that the federal government is using this as (yet another) excuse to expand its powers and overstep its bounds. -- And once it makes an 'exception' for the fence - what is to stop them from making an exception for any other thing they want ??

Regardless of peoples stance on immigration or border security - the threat of continued federal takeover or state function has to be of concern to many.

Land mines are not something easy to install and they are dangerously prone to sudden explosions. Look at the DMZ on the Korean Peninsula, which is the single largest man-made military obstruction in the world. The land mines in the DMZ are intended to provide a buffer zone for any attempts by North Korea to invade South Korea and to warn the South of an imminent invasion.

Our Southern border isn't a demilitarized zone nor is it no-mans land. It is home to hundreds of desert species and our border runs across many private and public properties.

As much as Alitards like to believe so, there is no danger of an imminent invasion from Mexico. In fact, the Mexicans should be worried about the U.S. given our country's propensity to invade other nations.
