A med school thread! I'm excited.
I have a brochure from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine in my hands right now, and I received it last month personally from the science outreach rep. so I know the info is not outdated.
Under residency it specifically states that we can apply for admission under "SB 1528" and you qualify if:
-You have graduated from a HS or received a GED in TX
-Resided in Texas for at least 3 yrs as of the date of HS graduation (or GED)
-Has lived in Texas 12 months prior to enrollment
-If you are not a permanent resident or US Citizen you must fill out an affidavit stating that you will become one at the earliest opportunity to do so.

A background check is a MUST though, as I'm sure this holds true for every med school in America (I believe). I have a DL so they can conduct a background check with my DL #, but this may be a major obstacle for some of you.

This info I got it straight out of the brochure.
So I think the real challenge is not admission but getting funding for it.

I hope this helped.

Yeah, I will ask my advisor what I would about the background check, but from what I understand you only need a social security number to do the background check. I was looking at the requirements on their website. They ask you about a drivers license, but you could leave it blank.

About paying, Texas medical schools are the lowest in the US. It is about 12,000 per year. I pay about 8k for my college, so it's not too big a difference.

I'm just glad I don't have to wait for the DREAM Act to apply. When I do, I will provide a lot of information so people can know how the process is.

Well here in Texas when I applied to volunteer at a hospital they gave me what they call a POI Form and its basically to conduct a background check and it didn't even ask for a SSN, they only asked for a DL #, but definitely ask your advisor for more info. And yes please do keep us updated!

An ITIN is an Individual Taxpayer's Identification Number and it is only used to pay taxes, everyone is eligible for one, you just cant use it for employment purposes, etc.

You can attend Med School there but you won't be able to have in-state tuition.

It will be a lot harder to get in to the University of Texas because they give preference to in-state students.

Quote:
The Medical and Dental Schools of The University of Texas System are authorized by the Texas Legislature to accept only a limited number of non-residents for enrollment in an entering class. Non-resident students should have outstanding qualifications.
For this reason

Quote:
4. Potential for Service to the State of Texas
A state medical school must, as a primary concern, produce practitioners who will serve the people of that state.
Source

They prefer students who will stay in Texas after graduation.

You can also try private Medical Schools in Texas. They probably won't give as much importance to residency in their admissions process.

Baylor college of medicine is the only private medical school in Texas, but it is also pretty hard to get in being an out of state even though it is a private school. They take around 70-90% from instate students.

The thing about Texas medical schools is if you are out of state and get in, they will give you a scholarship so you can pay instate tuition. It's a little weird, but it is some sort of waiver that allows you to get instate tuition.

You shouldn't worry much about paying, its about getting in. It will probably be impossible unless you have unbelievable stats. 90-95% of Texas public medical schools are comprised instate students. It would probably be easier to get into Harvard MS, if you had a 4.0, 37+ MCAT, and were undocumented, than a Texas public school.

I didn't want to discourage you, but this is just how it is. Even legal out-state students applying to Texas find it very rough to impossible. Still try to apply if you have great stats.

Also, glad to you are interested in medicine.

Assuming you guys are all pre-med, what are y'all majoring in??
I have declared Biology with a minor in chem. But now I don't know if I should do double major or go first with a BS nursing, but I don't know if that would be a good idea.
