Boys and girls:

I called the USCIS office this morning to see how long they expect our renewals to be processed.

Get ready for this...

6 months.

That's based on the most recent information that the representative has. She said it may be updated in the future as the service centers continue to process the renewals.

If your EAD expires before the 6 months are up--which would be the case for all of us--then at this point the best option would be to set up an appointment at one of their offices and get them to help you extend your EAD until your renewal is approved. There isn't a process for that yet, either.

Why they would make us renew within 150-120 days of our expiration date when the processing centers are taking 6 months to finish their work is beyond me. Hopefully they do have a process of separating the renewal and initial requests and that the 6 months is only for initial applications.

Anyway. I don't mean to freak everyone out with this, but I wanted to share the most recent information I have.

Thanks for the update. This is horrible news indeed for most of us applying for renewals. I was dreading something like this and now I'm pretty sure I'll be losing my job and license for who knows how long. I wonder if there is any way we can be proactive about this? Get the attention of some of more prominent immigration groups and see if they can expedite things. I hope this rep you talked to really knows and wasn't just saying b.s. I was afraid something like this could happen and specially given how long it took them to even release the renewal guide. We're going to be pay the price for their mistake! This is really pissing me off now.

It will probably be 3 months maximum. That is the usual time for getting an EAD renewal.

The other thing that I'm thinking is that DACA applications take 6 months to process according to the USCIS website but EAD takes 90 days. The rep was probably looking at those numbers which anyone can view. The last update was around May of 2014. The fact is that USCIS processes EADs on a daily basis not just for people like us but for many other people who are here on various kinds of visas and permits. I'm hopeful that they have the expertise to process these renewals within a reasonable amount of time.

So that doesn't make sense because even if you check for EADs filed concurrently with I-821D, the service time is still 90 days. Yet the I-821D process time is still 6 months. How is that possible?

I think it's currently taking 6 months minimum to process the I-821D for initial applicants given the volume and all the evidence they have to go through in addition to processing all other immigration cases. Once they approve you for the DACA, they probably process the EAD which takes a shorter amount of time. In my mind though, it would be logical to process both simultaneously but I'm not sure how they're coming up with these timelines either. If you google EAD processing timelines, everyone says it takes 90 days. I have friends who came here on student visas and they applied for work permits and it took about 2-3 months too. Also, from their perspective can you imagine having to deal with EAD extensions for thousands of people? I would think they would like to process these quickly to avoid additional paperwork and processing time. The government is terribly inefficient and it's unfortunate that we may be paying the price.

Those customer representatives don't know anything. Last time I called they did not even know what an advance parole was.

6 months is for first time applicants only.

Renewals should be 3 months maximum.

You know what's even funnier? When you call the national service number, there is a special prompt for DACA. The person who answered the phone didn't even know what DACA was and asked for my country of birth and whether I was legally in the country.

3 months sounds more logical. There is nothing really to investigate. No paperwork was submitted.
