The DREAM Act, people tell us, is being used as a selling point on comprehensive reform. This is a great way to pass nothing at all. When a larger bill fails it is easy for legislators to divert attention from themselves and point fingers to other factors. All in order to keep you down for longer - to maintain the status quo.

Both political parties are interested in maintaining the status quo, because they have absolute power over you. A situation with which they are very comfortable. You, on the other hand, should focus on gaining power. The DREAM Act is your rights, the DREAM Act is your power. Take this power and comprehensive reform becomes a reality. Without that power both DREAM Act and CIR are doomed to failure. We cannot fight the fight from within the shadows.
Couldn't have said it any better...

Here's a question though: What does the Dream act gain to accomplish by being part of the CIR. they keep saying Dream will be part of CIR. if CIR is already legalizing everyone, what can Dream possibly accomplish that isn't part of CIR ?

Yes, I too don't want to be a downer, since I'm new on here, but the fact remains that immigration reform including the dream-act are less likely to happen. Mind you, it's not impossible, just unlikely. I really believe that 2006 was an opportunity that comes once a generation. I think that advocacy groups really blew it with those massive demonstrations and hundreds of thousands of people shouting "si se puede"(for god's sakes Americans can hardly speak their own language, and were just freaked out by the chanting in Spanish, not understanding it's positive message) and carrying foreign flags. It was a Public Relations disaster!!! I was following all the machinations of the bill that was going through the congress at that time (I am a c-span junkie) and I have to say that when the demonstrations began the whole tone of the debate in congress changed. If those demonstrations had never happened arousing the anger of every red-neck in America, I truly believe that an immigration bill would have quietly been passed by the U.S. congress in 2006. If a bill is to pass next year it has to pass quietly, no demonstrations and all that stuff, it just gets the crazies and minute-men freaks worked up.

Also, because many or even most of the people working on the bill don't have a personal stake in it, not being illegal themselves, they tend to refuse to compromise. For instance, if only people who have been here 5 yrs. or more can be legalized they should accept it instead of demanding that even people who crossed the border yesterday should be allowed to stay. Also I remember when Senator Diane Finestein(spelling) was proposing giving illegal immigrants 6 yr working visas that would be have to be renewed and valid only if the person was working and filing taxes, the advocates shut that down too. They even complained when they wanted a $2000 fine. Now how many of us would pay all we have for legal status?? I know I would. The advocates really need to be realistic and less public about the behind the scene negotiations. NO DEMONSTRATIONS!!

There is NO way for CIR to pass before the economy gets better. So many people will say "why should we care for illegal immigrants when we have millions of unemployed US citizens?!?!" and vote against it.

Eh, you just gotta keep hope alive.

Gutierrez will be introducing his bill to the House next week. It probably won't go anywhere but it's all about keeping the conversation alive about immigration. we have to be more organized than we were in 2007. we will be and we will make something happen!

Pessimism? Me?

I just don't want people to build up their hopes really high to avoid a down fall. Just like with Obama, lots of people expected a lot from him...and look at what he has done. I'm not saying he hasn't done anything; all I'm expressing is he seems to be more of a "talker" than a "doer".

I really want to see the DREAM Act enacted, but I'm way too experienced to blindly believe "politicians will do something once the time is right" I heard that story so many times before, it means nothing.

The day the DREAM Act passes the House or the Senate, I may consider start getting optimistic about it; but not before.

And please, stop it with the insults. Show some maturity.
Agreed.

Seems like the only time Obama or any of his reps talk about immigration reform is when they are in front of a Hispanic or pro-immigration audience. I"m getting pretty tired of their gutlessness. A great example of this is the white house's "no comment" reaction to the introduction of CIR. Don't believe me look it up. We must remain optimistic but I've always disliked blind faith.

well... at least the Health reform will be voted on tomorrow morning, they managed to defeat the Republican fillibuster (attempts to delay the vote until much later pending potential revisions and the many attempts to defeat the bill citing constitutional problems among other things). It does however seem like this will be a very close battle from what I see, both sides fought a lot on what were essentially a few issues, however, the confusing matter came about when they talked about the same issues in different manners. The side the opposes the reform says that it will not benefit anyone under 35, the side that is for the bill says that it is the only hope for a lot of people that lose coverage under their parents, for example..

After this they will hopefully go along with the CIR.

I have not been paying much attention to what the house of representatives have been doing for the past several weeks though.

the results were 60-39 with Senator Bunning from Kentucky not voting, therefore it just barely passed.

Not really, all they needed this morning was a simply majority, 51 votes. Yet they got all 60.
