*sigh* I hope she's ok.

The problem here is that people only want to listen to what they want to hear. Just like the media-- when thousands upon thousands of people showed up in DC to protest, we saw a small coverage despite the amount of people. Yet, when there was a small group of people at the same time for health care reform, that had more coverage.

It's just sad that all these efforts are being made but like I said before, people only want to hear what they want to hear. Reality is: the majority of Americans don't like our status.

If you decide to do something as insane as going on a hunger strike with a small group of people, you really need to have a better plan than to just sit in front of someones office and starve. The point of a hunger strike is to incite guilt in the people who get to see you do it to get more supporters. Eventually that group gets big enough that your opinion starts to actually matter to the people upstairs.

You do not ever do it as a way to directly achieve your goal. It never works. With 10 people it is practically laughable and it is virtually pre-written that you are either going to eventually end it or you are going to get sick enough that you will be brought to a hospital.

It would be like me going to Time Square and start whipping myself and have a big sign next to me that says "Pass Dream Act or I will whip myself to death". I would be nothing more than a tourist attraction. People would walk by, look at me for a couple of seconds and then go about their business and they wouldn't even remember what I was supporting.

You cannot equate a hunger strike, a historically significant form of civil disobedience used effectively for decades by some of the most powerful agents of social change (e.g. Ghandi, Chavez), to randomly whipping yourself in Times Square. Not comparable, by any means.

At least these girls are doing something. I applaud their efforts and wish more of us were more active.

Also, I heard about the girls on various new media websites. It is no coincidence that a large portion of old media chooses to overlook their actions, but like I said, at least they are doing something.
